Local Arrangements

Conference Location

Our conference will be held in downtown Seattle at the Red Lion Hotel on 5th Avenue. The Red Lion Hotel is in the center of the city with easy access to many fine restaurants and shopping galore. An easy walk from the hotel takes you to Westlake Center where you can ride the monorail to Seattle Center. Pike Place Market is a favorite landmark and is about 4 blocks west of the hotel.

Where is Seattle?

Seattle is located in the state of Washington which is in the Northwest part of the United States. You can get information about our area and the many attractions available through the Seattle Visitor Center web site.

Getting to Seattle

by Plane...

Seattle/Tacoma (airport code: SEA) is situated approximately 20 minutes south of Seattle. Flights to Seattle/Tacoma airport are available from numerous carriers. Shuttles and taxis are available at the airport for the trip into the city.

by Train...

King Street station is on the south side of Seattle, minutes from the hotel. AMTRAK is the rail carrier. Taxis are available at the station for the trip to the hotel.

by Car...

Interstate 5 and Interstate 90 intersect just south of the city. To reach the hotel, exit off Interstate 5.

Local Seattle Travel and Sights

Your Local Arrangement Committee has compiled information to make your visit to Seattle more enjoyable with tips on how to get around Seattle, what to do in Seattle, and where things are located relative to the hotel. Some activities (i.e. shows) require advance reservations. Additional information will be available when you arrive. The Seattle Visitor Center web site also offers links to various attractions in and around Seattle.

Northwest Weather

May is a beautiful time of year in Seattle. Temperatures will be cool and although there is always a chance of showers, our skies are often clear and blue at that time of year. For more information, the Seattle Visitor Center web site does provide weather trends.

Travel Information

Passports and Visas

A visitor visa may be required for travel to the United States, along with a valid passport. Please check with the American Embassy or Consulate in your area for detailed information, or talk to your travel agent.

Voltage

The United States operates on a 120V system; those traveling from outside the US may need an adaptor. Check the Voltage Valet for information on requirements and to find adapters.

Conference Dining

Continental breakfast, morning refreshments, lunch and afternoon refreshments are included with your registration. They are available from Monday morning May7th to Thursday afternoon May 10th, 2007. There are also ample restaurants in and around the hotel.

Special accommodations and/or dietary requirements should be noted on the Conference registration form.

Smoking Policy

There is no smoking allowed at the Conference. In addition, Washington state law requires there be no smoking within 25 feet of a building entrance.

Social Events

Cray Inc. Reception

Cray Inc. will host a reception one evening during the conference. All conference participants and their guests are invited to attend this event. Details will be provided at a later date.

CUG Night Out

The Local Arrangements Committee invites all attendees to enjoy the CUG Night Out on the Royal Argosy. The Royal Argosy is one of the finest vessels in the Argosy Cruise fleet and is a favorite venue for both locals and visitors alike.

The Royal Argosy

The 3 hour dinner cruise is a unique and extraordinary experience that showcases Seattle’s beautiful skyline, surrounding scenic mountain ranges and breathtaking beauty of the Pacific Northwest. This is a no cost event for conference attendees but there is a $40 fee for an attendee spouse or guest.


Transportation from the hotel to the dock will be provided. Upon boarding the vessel a photo will be taken and given to each attendee as a memento at the end of the cruise. You will start the cruise off with mouth watering hors D’oeuvres along with premium wine, beer and cocktails throughout the cruise. An exquisite buffet dinner will follow and end with a delicious assortment of desserts.

On-Site Facilities

Messages

During the conference (May 7–10), telephone messages will be taken at the on-site CUG Conference Office.

Faxes

A fax machine is available at the hotel business office for conference-related business. Incoming fax messages may be sent to the CUG Conference Office eFax™ at (1-509) 272-7239. Notices of incoming fax messages will be posted on the conference message board.

Wireless Access, E-mail, and Personal Computers

We will provide wireless access for your laptop computer througout the conference venue for which you must provide an 802.11b/g compatible card. Please make sure your wireless access has not been disabled by your company/institution as we will not be able to modify this on site.

The e-mail room will be equipped with 8 personal computers. SSH will be available on all systems. Two printers will be available on the LAN. One computer and printer are designated for the use of speakers for last minute changes to presentations. You may also bring your laptop computer and connect to the ethernet hub. The ethernet hub accepts RJ-45 modular jacks. The e-mail room will be available until Thursday at 4 PM.

Speaker Preparation

We invite speakers to use the personal computer and printer in the e-mail room for last minute changes. Video projectors will be provided in all session rooms. Please find time before sessions and during breaks to test your laptop connection to the video projectors. Should you require any assistance please come to the conference office.

Business Services and Photocopying

A complete set of business support services is available at the hotel. If you plan to distribute copies of your presentation, please bring sufficient copies with you. You may also have copies made at the hotel business office for a charge.

Special Assistance

Any requests for special assistance during the conference should be noted on the "Special Requirements" area of the registration form, or you may contact the Local Arrangements Committee.
