Desktop Publishing Guidelines for
Preparing Papers for
CUG Conferences and Workshops

Introduction

These guidelines are for those authors who use desktop publishing (word processing and page layout programs) to prepare papers. You may prepare your paper in a basic word processing document or in a page layout format.

Page Layout Specifications

  • Prepare the manuscript in 2 columns, each 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm or 21 picas) wide, single spaced, with about 1/4 inch (not more than .635 cm or 2 picas) between columns. Choose a readable type style and a small (~ 10 point) type size. 10 point Times Roman is a good choice. The print on each page should not exceed 9 inches (22.86 cm or 54 picas) long from top to bottom. Text columns should be justified.
  • Title Information
    • TITLE: The title should be centered, in caps/lower case, at the top of page 1.
    • AUTHOR(s): The author(s) name(s) should be centered, under the title on page 1, in upper and lower case, italic. Please omit titles and degrees.
    • ORGANIZATION(s): The organization(s) name(s) should follow the author(s) name(s).
    • ABSTRACT: Include an abstract of 200 to 250 words. It is centered under the author and organization sections. Precede the abstract with "ABSTRACT:" in all capitals, bold, followed by a colon.
    • KEY WORDS: List words (maximum 12). Precede the list with "KEYWORDS:" in all capitals, bold, followed by a colon.
  • Text
    • Page 1: Text begins immediately after the title information above.
    • Page 2 and further: Text begins at the top of the page, as expected. The text and graphics columns on each page should not exceed 9 inches (22.86 cm or 54 picas) long from top to bottom.
    • Page numbers: Please include page numbers on your submission centered at the bottom of each page.
    • Sections: Sections may be numbered down to five levels; i.e., 1.1.1.1.1.
  • Tables, figures, and/or illustrations may be inserted in the body of the paper or grouped at the end.
  • Contact and Biographical Information
Provide a section at the end of your paper called, "About the Authors." Include the author(s) title, 1 or 2 line biographical information, and current contact information (organization name, address, phone, and e-mail).
