Local Arrangements

Our Theme

The theme of CUG SUMMIT 2002 is "Manchester: from Weaving Cotton to Grid Computing". Around the time of the industrial revolution in Britain (18th and 19th centuries), Manchester became an important centre for cotton spinning and weaving. The reasons behind the rapid development were that Manchester was an ideal location for this kind of industry. Lancashire has a relatively humid climate and provided great access to the port of Liverpool and to the canal system that was being started. There was also good access to a local supply of fuel, namely coal.

Now, Manchester is bringing itself into the 21st century. The Manchester economy is no longer based around textiles, but around business and commerce. The University is playing its part too by becoming one of the world's leading centres for grid computing.

It is because of this heritage, and the current developments that the city of Manchester is famous the world over; there are no less than 18 Manchesters worldwide.

Tatton Park has much to offer. Its two historic houses, the Mansion and Tudor Old Hall, are set in 1000 acres of beautiful parkland with lakes, tree-lined avenues and herds of red and fallow deer. Award-winning gardens, a working farm, specialty shops and a superb programme of special events complete the picture.

While we have something to eat we will listen to the Manchester Boys Choir, who never fail to impress. The Manchester Boys Choir performances are regularly referred to as an outstanding evening's entertainment as they capture the hearts and minds of their listeners by the sheer beauty of their voices, professionalism in performance, musicianship and entertaining programmes.
